'Magnifico'

The 10th Duke of Hamilton, painted by Henry Raeburn. Offices he held included MP, Privy Councillor, Ambassador to the court of St Petersberg, Lord Lieutenant, Knight of the Garter, President of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, Trustee of the British Museum and Grand Master of the Garter. Magnifio, as he was known, was also an avid art collector. He rather conveniently married Lady Susan, daughter of his great friend William Beckford who was one of few collectors more prolific than himself.
